Make discussion partners
Pair participants for a short conversation or feedback round when attendance-specific history is not required.
Create pairs from the shared name list. Each pair is a group of two, and an odd person stays visible in a group of one.
Add participants and generate groups to see the result.
Add at least two names, then generate pairs.
A random pair generator shuffles the shared name list into groups of two, applies keep-apart rules, and leaves one group of one when the count is odd.
This page is groups of two. Open the random team generator to split by group count or size.
Partner matching
Pair participants for a short conversation or feedback round when attendance-specific history is not required.
Generate casual head-to-head pairs for drills, table games, or a non-bracket activity.
Keep two people apart before you copy or print the accepted pairs.
Instructions
Enter one distinct person per line and remove anyone who is not participating in this pairing round.
Mark relationships that must not become a pair and keep the list limited to rules you can explain.
When the list is uneven, show a Bye or use another available option instead of silently dropping an entry.
Check every pair and exclusion, then copy, print, or generate another arrangement.
Troubleshooting
When: Both people are locked to the same group, or no other group can take a swap.
Why: The generator will not move a locked person, so that pair can remain together.
Try: Unlock one person or lock them to different groups, then regenerate.
When: An odd number of usable entries remains.
Why: Pairs use two people, so the last group contains one person instead of dropping a name.
Try: Keep the group of one, add another person, or remove one name.
When: Two people have the same normalized display name.
Why: The tool cannot distinguish identical labels when applying exclusions or showing results.
Try: Add initials or another identifier before generating pairs.
Trust
Without exclusions, the active list is paired randomly; each restriction removes possible arrangements and can make some outcomes unavailable.
The shared name list and the latest pairs are stored in this browser. Random 42 does not upload them or create an account.
Boundaries
The tool can apply explicit exclusions but cannot judge mentoring fit, language compatibility, safeguarding, or interpersonal risk.
FAQ
The last group has one person, so the odd name stays visible instead of being dropped.
Yes. Keep those two apart, then regenerate. The status line says when both are locked in the same group.
Not automatically. This page uses only the keep-apart rules you set for the current list.
No. The list stays in this browser and is shared with the team generator and seating chart.
